DotNetNuke is one of the leading and widely used Content Management System (CMS) of ASP.net. We have tried to cover some of the important Do’s and Don’ts using which you can improve and enhance the SEO techniques and performance. For people who are not clear about the Search Engine Optimization (SEO), it is an essential process that is required to optimize your website to make it more search engine friendly. There are several techniques of SEO using which the website is optimized to bring the site links on the top results of the search engine. The SEO process is a time consuming process and if the process is followed correctly and regularly then you will surely get the desired results. Using the Do’s and Don’ts slated in this post, you can prevent the mistakes and correctly follow the path making your site more search engine friendly.

Do’s

    1. (a)

Use the DNN skins which is as per the latest web-standards and follows all the necessary practices for accessible content. With a good skin, it will probably note whether it is XHTML or HTML5 compliant. You can also find a small W3C icon which indicates that it is compliant to the code. The W3C icon is provided by the international body which sets the standard of key web technologies. If you are using a good then it will not use tables in the layout. While using the skins, you can also refer to the section 508 of the US law which has defined standard to allow the website to be accessed by each and everyone including users who use assistive technologies like screen readers. If your site is section-508 compliant then it will be highly search engine friendly with the required meta-tag descriptions, additional texts, and useful robots used by the famous search engines like Bing, Yahoo and Google.

    1. (b)

With the help of site wide, page level descriptions, and keywords available in the DNN, you can take maximum advantage of the same. You will find that most of the themes use these elements in the header meta-tags of the website. These keywords are highly useful in pointing out the required keyword, because the search engines do not rely only on keyword tags for indexing. It is recommended to keep the keywords short, simple and to the point. The site wide description is majorly used when there is no page level description. Using the site settings options, you can easily define the descriptions and keywords for each page of the website.

    1. (c)

Updating the content and adding information content regularly is the secret to get the desired results. You can use words and phrases which can be attractive for your customers. Ensure the questions which you post for your customers are positive and interactive. The questions should be framed considering yourself as a customer. It is important to use the same terminology and jargons that the customers are able to understand and use to search with. By following this method, you will be able to increase the site rank of your site and increase the required keywords on your site. You can also use the keywords in titles and URLs, as search engines place more emphasis on these elements.

    1. (d)

It is also recommended to use the semantic nature of the HTML which improves the value of the content. More weightage should be given to the H1 tagging and H2 tagging. Use the appropriate codes for addresses, paragraph, titles, and attributes. In short the page should be properly structured with content and codes so that it is easier for the search engines to parse the site. Using the in-built editor you can use the required tags, describe the texts and styling as well.

Don’ts

    1. (a)

Avoid any type of text to image conversion, because none of the search engines can read the images nor the visually-impaired users can screen the images. You can use web font services like the Google Web Fonts or Webtype instead of using the text images. If you need to use the image instead of text then you should ensure that it is properly tagged. Use the alt tag for all the images used on the website. If required, you can also add a description with images.

    1. (b)

Do not post any sort of content that is provocative, misleading, duplicate or copied from other sites. The search engines are smart enough to identify such sites and penalize them. Post information, authentic and genuine information to increase your visitors. Generate relation with your customers by feeding the content that they love to read, not what you like to post.

  1. (c)

Don’t move or rename the pages if it is not necessary. If you change the structure of your website, then it can cause dead links and if any customer has already bookmarked that page then it will surely be of no use. So the traffic your site is likely to go down. Even if you want to re-structure your site then use the DNN link redirect options by which even if the customer has an old URL, he/she will be redirected to the right location.
